Tirana

Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania. Albania's capital since 1920, independent since 1912 - with the Lushnja conference -, Tirana, which has a history of about 4 centuries, was founded in 1614 by Turkish General Sulejman Bargjini. They have been inhabited since Neolithic times and were built by Emperor Justinian in 520. Historically the Albanians are considered to be descendants of the ancient people of the Balkans, the Illyrians.

The city of Tirana probably took its name from the Albanian word të rrëna, meaning fallen, meaning the landslides from the mountain Dajti at the foot of which the capital is built. This is speculated as the most trusted version of the origin of the Tirana name. Another version, wants Emperor Justinian, on a walk in the area and looking for the name to give her, to meet a grandmother asking her what she is doing and answering "yer if", that is, making a thread of sheep's wool .

By the end of World War I, Albania had been constantly attacked by its neighbors. In 1939 he was occupied by Mussolini, while in 1943 he went into Nazi domination. By the time the Communist Party took power in November 1944, with Enver Hoxha leader. For about half a century, the communist regime will impose a policy of isolation, which will expire in February 1991, with the upheavals at that time also ending the long period of socialism throughout Albania. Since the establishment of democracy, Tirana, which is the largest city in Albania's wider democracy and is in the middle of the country, is beginning to grow rapidly. In recent years, Tirana has made progress in the model of major European cities, trying to exacerbate the history of the country, which has been a field of war and war, because of the various conquerors who have been defending this land over the centuries.
